FAQS

Q:What Problems Can Flat Feet Cause?

A:

Pain is one of the most common problems associated with flat feet. For some people, the pain only occurs after prolonged periods of standing or other physical activity. Other people may experience aches in the arch and heel or swelling along the medial arch. When this is the case, custom orthotics from Premier Feet may be sufficient to reposition the foot and reduce discomfort. In more severe cases, though, individuals with flat feet may lose the ability to stand on their toes as the Achilles tendon and calf muscles lose flexibility. People who wear shoes with even slightly elevated heels may be especially at risk for this problem. If tendon flexibility cannot be restored through stretches and exercises, surgery to lengthen the tendon may be necessary. However, this is typically considered a last resort.

Q:Do Flip Flops Cause Flat Feet?

A:

Wearing flip flops does not directly cause flat feet, but flip flops can have other harmful effects. Flip flops alter gait, which can raise the risk of injury. The gait associated with flip flops increases the vertical force on the heel when it strikes the ground. Research suggests that people who wear flip flops have a higher risk of experiencing other health problems, including plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and sprained ankles. Tendon injuries, in turn, can contribute to flat feet. Flip flops can also cause problems for people who already have flat feet, because they are unstable and provide inadequate support. Flat-footed flip flop wearers may experience pain that extends from the foot up to the ankle and leg. So, although wearing flip flops may not cause flat feet, people who are concerned about foot health should still wear these shoes sparingly.

Q:What are Good Exercises for People with Flat Feet?

A:

Arch strength and flexibility exercises can help counter flat feet. To build arch strength, you can sit down and use one foot at a time to pick up or pull on a soft object positioned on the floor in front of you, such as a towel. To stretch your arch muscles, you can perform calf raises on the edge of a step or small platform. You should start with your feet in a flat position with your heels unsupported, rise onto your tiptoes, and then lower back down so your heel is slightly below the level of your toes. You can also stretch your upper calves by sitting on the ground and pulling your foot toward you to flex it. When performing any of these exercises, be careful to stay control and listen to your body to avoid causing further foot injuries.

Q:How Can I Care for My Feet at Home?

A:

There are several things that you can do to care for your feet at home. In addition to keeping feet dry and clean, it is recommended for you to have them checked by a foot doctor on a regular basis.

  • Wash your feet daily with warm water and a mild soap.
  • Be sure to massage your feet while washing them to improve blood circulation to your toes.
  • Dry your feet completely with a dry cloth before putting on any socks or shoes.
  • Keep your toenails trimmed to prevent infections and complications.

When trimming your toenails, use a toenail clipper to cut the nails straight across; do not curve the edges or cut your toenails too short, as this can result in them growing back the wrong way and cause a great deal of discomfort. To learn more on how to care for your feet properly, contact Premier Foot on 972-424-8999.

Q:Can I Take Care of My Ingrown Toenails Myself?

A:

Ingrown toenails can be really uncomfortable to experience. The longer an ingrown toenail grows, the more pain and distress it will cause. While there is nothing wrong with treating your ingrown toenailsyourself, it is highly recommended that you to seek professional treatment from a foot doctor. Toenails become ingrown when the edges of them grow into the corners of the skin around the toe. The deeper an ingrown toenail grows into the skin, the more painful, swollen and inflamed it will become. If left untreated, ingrown toenails can lead to infection and further complications. If you suspect that you have an ingrown toenail, or want to learn how to prevent them, give Premier Foot a call on 972-424-8999.

Q:Why Do I Have Foot Pain When I Walk?

A:

If you notice foot pain when you walk, you should visit a podiatrist. According to the American Podiatrist Medical Association, at least 75 percent of Americans have experienced some type of foot pain. Common reasons for foot pain when walking include poor fitting shoes, improper posture, long periods of standing, long or ingrown toenails, bone spurs, repeat stress to previously injured areas, high impact activities, plantar fascistic, osteoarthritis, diabetes and injuries. In addition to providing treatment for many causes of foot pain, a foot doctor can fit your feet to ensure that you are wearing shoes that provide proper arch support and cushioning.

 Q:What Are Common Foot Issues?

A:

Walking, running and even standing put a lot of stress on your feet and ankles, putting them at high risk for injury. Poorly fitting shoes and age can lead to problems such as calluses, corns, bunions, fungus, ingrown toenails, bone and heel spurs and blisters. Underlying health conditions such as gout, osteoarthritis and diabetes can lead to chronic foot pain and lack of mobility. Infection, disease, trauma and sports injuries can also cause problems, and can ultimately damage the structure, appearance and functionality of your feet.

What Are Symptoms of Common Foot Problems?

A:

Learning to recognise common signs of foot problems can help you achieve optimal foot health. Early detection and early treatment can prevent problems from affecting your mobility and overall quality of life. Common symptoms of foot problems include pain, itching, burning sensations, dry skin, swelling, tenderness, deformity of the bones and structures in the feet, thickening of the skin, rashes, ulcers, numbness and tingling sensations. Although foot problems are fairly common, you should always see a podiatrist at the first sign of any pain or symptoms. Engaging in low impact activities while wearing properly fitting shoes, a key component of a healthy lifestyle, can ease any current foot issues and reduce your risk of future problems.

Q:What Is The Turf Toe Taping Procedure?

A:

Turf toe taping provides support to an injured big toe joint. To tape your big toe, grab some athletic tape and follow these simple steps:

  • Wrap a 1-inch piece of athletic tape around the middle of the big toe to serve as an anchor for the other pieces of athletic tape.
  • Take two pieces of 5-inch tape and wind them around the middle of your foot, keeping your toes flexed as you wrap.
  • Take four pieces of 1- inch tape and place one end of each piece to the anchor piece that is on the toe. Using tension, run each piece towards the tape wrapped around the middle of the foot. Overlap each piece so that they are tight and secure.
  • Take two pieces of 5-inch tape and wrap them around the middle of your foot, over the four 1-inch pieces.

Once you have finished taping your turf toe, you should not be able to flex your injured toe forwards or backwards.

Q:How Long Will Laser Treatment Take to Remove Toenail Fungus?

A:

The amount of time that it takes for laser treatment to work on toenail fungusdepends on how severe the infection is. The average amount of time that it takes for laser treatment to work on a mild infection of toenail fungus is approximately 20 to 30 minutes and relief is noticeable immediately after treatment. If you suspect that you have toenail fungus, contact your local foot doctor for treatment..

To reduce your chances of developing toenail fungus and the need for laser treatment, use antibacterial powder to keep bacteria and fungus away. Wear socks and shoes that provide good air circulation to keep your feet dry and to prevent bacteria fungus from developing. To learn more about toenail fungus laser treatment, give Premier Foot a call on 972-424-8999.

 Q:What Are Common Running Injuries?

A:

The most common running injuries are runner’s knee, stress fractures, Achilles tendonitis, pulled muscles, sprained ankles, shin splints and plantar fasciitis. Over 80 percent of runners experience these injuries each year. As a high-impact activity, running places a lot of stress on joints and muscles. While some soreness and mild pain are common, you should seek immediate medical attention for any swelling, redness or stiffness, and for any persistent, nagging, or severe pain or discomfort. To prevent common running-related foot problems, be sure to warm up your muscles and joints before you run, listen to your body, know your limits and go see a doctor or physical therapist when you notice any sign of injury.

Q:What Are Common Tennis Foot Injuries?

A:

As a high-impact sport that requires fast, frequent movements, tennis often leads to foot injuries such as ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, tennis toe, plantar fasciitis, sesamoiditis, posterior tibial tendonitis (PTTD) and stress fractures. To lower your risk for injury while you are on the tennis court, invest in a good pair of tennis shoes, which have padded toe boxes and extra room to support your feet. Visit a podiatrist for a proper analysis to ensure that your tennis shoes fit the anatomy of your feet.

Q:What Shoes Can I Use Other than Flip-Flops?

A:

While sandals are very stylish and appealing, they are not the safest shoes for you to wear. Sandals do not provide enough cushion or arch support to accommodate your feet and can aggravate any foot problems that you already have. Any shoes that you decide to wear should provide ample arch support, cushioning and fit your feet properly. Make an appointment with your local foot doctor to get your feet properly fitted.

Good shoes should fit just right, promote air circulation and have a good amount of cushion and arch support to protect your feet from the stress and impact that comes from everyday use. Without the right shoes, you are putting yourself at risk for health conditions that can affect your comfort and mobility in the future. If you need assistance with choosing the right shoes to wear, contact Foot Premier on 972-424-8999.

Q:What Are The Best Shoes For Sports?

A:

Wearing inappropriate shoes while playing sports can increase your risk for injury. Follow our tips to select the best sports shoes.

  • See a podiatrist to learn about the anatomy of your feet. Understanding the size, shape and arch structure of your feet can help you choose the right shoes every time.
  • Shop for shoes in the evening to ensure you buy a big enough size, since your feet are larger at night than in the morning.
  • Make sure your shoes feel comfortable from the moment you put them on, rather than assuming they need to be broken in.
  • Choose footwear designed for your personal athletic activities, such as tennis, cross-training or running shoes.

The shoes you wear for sports can greatly affect the quality of your performance, health, and feet.

Q:What Are The Best Winter Shoes?

A:

When temperatures start dropping, don’t worry – you won’t have to sacrifice fashion in order to find the right pair of winter shoes. Choose shoes that fit your personal style while providing warmth, support and adequate traction to keep you and your feet comfortable and healthy during colder months. Treat leather and sheepskin boots and shoes with moisture-repellent products to keep your feet dry in the sleet and snow. To reduce your risk of foot injuries in slippery winter conditions, avoid thin or high heels, and choose shoes and boots that support your ankles without restricting your ability to flex your foot.
