5 Ways to Care for Your Athletic Feet This Year
Our team at Premier Foot & Ankle wishes you a healthy and happy 2025! As always, our top priority is keeping your feet in the best shape possible. We know, however, that playing team sports, running, cycling, and many other forms of physical exercise can be tough on your feet.
There’s no question that exercise is one of the top ways to support your physical well-being, but it’s important to take your foot health into consideration specifically, so you can keep playing comfortably.
New Year’s resolutions for your feet
Achilles tendonitis, athlete’s foot, and foot injuries — working out can cause wear-and-tear to your feet, as well as painful injuries.
We want to provide you with key advice about how to keep your hard-working feet in tip-top condition all year long. There’s a lot you can do to prevent injuries and protect your feet so they go the distance for you.
1. Protect your feet
Not leaving your feet vulnerable to toe smashes, ankle twists, and other injuries when you’re running, jumping, or gliding is the first step to keeping your feet in great shape for 2025.
This means wearing shoes that fit properly and are designed for the sport you’re playing, whether it’s basketball, tennis, or jogging. This helps keep toe and foot injuries at bay.
2. Keep your feet clean and dry
This sounds elementary, but don’t consider cleaning your feet something to rush through. By thoroughly washing your feet, drying them, and powdering them, you can avoid problems like athlete’s foot and toenail fungus.
It’s also important to wear flip-flops when you’re around a pool or in the locker room.
3. Take care when trimming your toenails
When you clip your nails, always use sterile tools, don’t cut them too short, and cut them straight across, as opposed to creating a rounded shape. Not doing these things can lead to a painful ingrown toenail, toenail fungus, and other problems.
4. Don’t wear your socks on repeat
Your feet sweat when you play sports and work out, so remember to have an “out with the old, in with the new” attitude when it comes to changing them. Once you take off your socks after an exercise session, toss them in the laundry basket. The next time you work out, grab a fresh, clean pair.
It’s also smart to choose socks made from moisture-wicking material, and shoes aren’t the only thing you should buy in the correct size. Make sure your socks correspond to your foot size accurately, so you don’t experience rubbing or chafing. That way, you can avoid blisters, corns, and calluses.
5. Know when it’s time to see your podiatrist
Don’t try to tough it out if your feet or ankles hurt or you notice problems developing, like toenail fungus, sprains that won’t heal, or plantar fasciitis.
We can offer innovative treatments for all these problems and more. They include, but aren’t limited to:
- Medical devices like orthotics
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Physical therapy
- Braces and splints to immobilize your foot or ankle
- Corticosteroid injections
- Exercises to improve range of motion
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to harness your body’s own healing capabilities
- Podiatherm™ uses radiofrequency energy to render nerves unable to transmit pain
- Minimally invasive EPAT® therapy, or shock wave therapy
- Multiwave locked system (MLS) laser therapy, an advanced, noninvasive treatment
This diverse array of treatments can also be combined to treat your specific conditions and symptoms. However, for some patients, even these treatments don’t offer complete relief.
In these instances, we’re prepared to perform surgical procedures for fractures, Achilles tendon repair, and more. We also perform foot reconstruction when needed.
A surgical solution can solve your sports-related foot pain and mobility problems when other treatments haven’t been sufficiently effective. They’re much less invasive than in the past, so you recover more quickly and experience reduced pain, bleeding, and scarring.
