Gout – What You Should Know
Gout is an affliction that many people suffer, more often than not it affects the joints in the toes, usually the big toe and it can be painful, very very painful. It has been described like feeling as though you have broken your toe – shoes are virtually impossible to wear and walking is difficult.
What is Gout?
Gout is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood, the uric acid can then turn into microscopic crystals that affect the joints – sodium urate. Once the crystals have built up, they can spill over from the joint cartilage and inflame the soft lining of the joint.
For many years, gout was considered to be a symptom of alcohol abuse. While alcohol certainly does have an impact, it is not the cause – even too much red meat has been shown to contribute to the symptoms.
More commonly, gout is found in males but you are at risk if you’re overweight, regardless of gender. Changing your lifestyle can improve the severity of gout attacks, quite often people who take medical advice (and stick to it!) may find themselves ‘magically’ cured and never have another attack.
